Umm, green isn't a Valentine's Day color.- 7 year old cousin

No, I don't have a boyfriend for Valentine's Day this year, same as any other year. Oh well. Inspired by a recent MissMusing (thanks AngelaDarling!) post, rather than focus on that imperfect fact, I'm going to focus on the other perfect moments of my Valentine's Day 2009.

Starting last night until Wednesday I will be playing mom to my 7 year old cousin, N. His real parents have jet setted (Can I use that in the past tense?) off to Las Vegas. So my world will be filled with the exciting world of Star Wars Clone Wars, Wii, and U.B. Funky's. Never heard of em? Well, these Funky's are an intense online world with all kinds of decorated animals which kind of resemble bears. Weird, I know, but apparently all the rage. Who am I to judge? I couldn't leave the house without my Tamagotchi.

This morning I woke up to a Yorkie jumping on my face...and I am the world's biggest non-animal person. ( I like to consider myself more of a people person.) I come downstairs to find N and G, my 10 year old brother, already up watching TV and each have a cold slice of cheese pizza in their hands. Keep in mind, it's about 8:30 am. Looks like I have this mom thing down! I offer eggs, pancakes, waffles, cereal, anything at all, but no, pizza hits the spot for them. Alright, I guess breakfast is taken care of.

So, we get dressed, blah, blah, blah and head to Lowe's. If you have a young one close to you, Lowe's (and Home Depot) have an awesome program twice a month, always on a Saturday morning. You get to go there and they have little projects for you to build. It's totally free and they supply all of the materials, including a pretty sweet looking apron :) Plus, after you're finished you get a certificate and a patch to sew on saying you completed the project. We've made race cars, treasure boxes, boats, calendar holders, and many others. Today we made a jewelry box.
Sweet, right?

So, came home for a few hours, then headed to G's basketball game, where no lie, my mom and sister showed up in matching shirts! Then they both proceeded to tell me that they can't believe I'm going to be a Special Ed teacher because I have such an attitude and am a horrible person, but we're focusing on the perfect moments of the day, right? So, my brother totally scored a three pointer!!! I was SO happy/proud of him! He doesn't have the best self esteem and for him to do that and have his cousin there too was amazing! They didn't win, but G sure helped them tighten the score!

Then N and I came home and made heart shaped cookies. While they were cooking, I started looking for sprinkles, which my aunt was sure to have because not kidding, she has EVERYTHING. Well, the only sprinkles I could find were from Christmas and luckily N had picked out the funfetti frosting, which comes with some sprinkles. So, I pull out the Christmas ones too, and there are a few containers of just red or just white and that was great. But my cousin wanted the other ones which were red, white, and GREEN mixed together. So I dump the whole thing out onto a plate and begin to separate them. Yes, you read correctly, I actually picked out all of the green sprinkles. How can I say no to a 7 year old who just wants to make the perfect cookies, and even save some for when his parents get back? Then we of course couldn't just have boring white frosting, so I dug for the food coloring and my aunt had neon food coloring. I had never seen anything except for the regular kind so you can imagine my excitement. It turned out to be a wonderful shade of pink! So we start frosting and all I can think of is how I'm really not very good at it and wish that I would have worked at the Cookie Company (you don't know how lucky you are, Gina). Luckily, N doesn't mind and we spent like 2 hours decorating the cookies.

Well, I'm off to do our Valentine craft, I hope that you have all had a fantastic day and remember to just focus on the great moments, because without those imperfect moments, you wouldn't be able to truly appreciate those amazing moments.

  1. I hate Lowe's but I hope they are still doing that program in a few years because L and I will be there for every project. See, I was right...you never know when that job experience will come in handy. After seeing G's valentine box, I bet they looked awesome too.

  3. I don't know why they don't let more people know about it, but we've been doing it for like 10 years.

  6. I'm really upset that I didn't make a jewelry box. But, the kids from my class made awesome V-day cards , so I'm content in their happiness.
